San Francisco’s history began with the Yelamu Ohlone people, before Spanish settlers established a mission and presidio in 1776. Originally called Yerba Buena, the city grew rapidly during the 1849 Gold Rush. Despite near-total destruction in the 1906 earthquake, it rebuilt to become a major cultural, and tech hub.
